Acne reacts to treatments differently from one person to another. The lucky ones try over the counter medication and voila they get their acne under control but for others it is a struggle as they keep hopping from one acne medication to another without any visible improvement. Several hundreds of dollars down the drain they realise their acne condition has not improved and the costs are getting higher with every new acne treatment and product they experiment with.
Some try these treatments for only a short time before giving up. Most of these acne medicines must be used for a minimum of two months to see any improvement. If, after this time, there is no significant improvement in the skin, then try another treatment.
There is no clear cut way to treat acne. Every one will swear by the acne remedy that helped them while others will have tried the same remedy and found no relief.
Acne is a condition which needs to be approached in a systematic way, so let us examine the ways that we can care for our acne skin and reduce the need for potent acne medication:
- Personal hygiene by avoiding the frequent handling of the skin especially rubbing, squeezing or touching the lesions or pimples.
- Maintain a skin care regime by using gentle and mild cleansers for the skin not more than twice a day in the morning and evening.
- Avoid astrigents and only apply it on very oily skin and only on the oily spots.
- Avoid the sun which can seriously damage the skin, promote aging of skin, and cause skin cancer. Many of the medications used to treat acne make a person very sensitive to sunburn.
- Acne skin care demands that all cosmetics, such as foundation, blush, eye shadow, and moisturizers, should be oil free.
- Wash oily hair often as hairstyling products that come in contact with the skin along the hairline can cause burning or stinging in people with acne and even aggravate the acne.
- Men who shave and who have acne can try electric and safety razors to see which is more comfortable for their acne skin care. Men who use a safety razor should use a sharp blade and soften their beard thoroughly with soap and water before applying shaving cream. Shave lightly and only when necessary to avoid blemishes.
- But Acne is also caused by the inability of the skin which is the body's largest organ to get rid of the toxins from within. So to help detoxify your system by drinking plenty of water and eating water-rich foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables. This will allow the skin to be rehydrated from the inside to prevent blocked pores.
- Exfoliate your skin twice a week to get rid of dead skin cells which when mixed with the sebum (oil) creates more blocked pores and more acne.
- Tea tree oil is an antiseptic and antibacterial, great for existing infections.
- Lavender oil used for soothing and healing and is great for accelerating healing of scars.
- Look out for products that use Coconut and Jojoba oils as a base.
Drinking green tea helps reduce inflammation, hormonal activity and aids in detoxification. Green tea is an antioxidant and has natural anti-bacterial properties. It would be beneficial to have 2 to 3 cups of green tea daily as part of your diet.
